This is a little painting I called "Humming along". I was asked to paint this one for a seven year old little girl who is getting ready to undergo heart surgery in the hospital. I believe God in heaven gave us each unique gifts and then at certain times in our lives we are presented with the opportunity to use these gifts to help our fellow human beings. Jesus was all about fellowship with one another and helping each other out and if I can use this gift he bestowed upon me to make this little girl feel better I sure will. If any of you are believers in Christ as I am and you happen upon this blog, please take a few minutes and pray for this little girl and her family.
This is actually the first time I've painted a hummingbird and they are quite interesting. I wanted to use as much color as I could in this painting so I made the background a vibrant and blurred green. This meant I could use the pinks and purples in the bird and the flowers because I had a complimentary color in the background. I also made the edges of the painting a darker green to draw the eye in toward the center.
Now the hummingbird has blues, yellows, greens, and purples. I mirrored these colors in the different flowers to pull everything together. Like a lot of birds, hummingbirds have reflective feathers that appear kind of shiny. It takes a lot of practice to learn how to achieve that reflective look on a birds feather. I do it by adding several layers on top of each other with the top layer being the brightest highlight and in the shadowed areas the top layer is the darkest paint.
Signed and numbered prints are available of this painting for $60 a piece. It is a limited edition so only 500 will be available.
God bless and stay inspired
